Inspection & testing of the Tamar Bridge maintenance gantry

RHC Lifting has arrived on-site to start a new project to inspect and test the four maintenance gantries which run underneath the Tamar Bridge.

RHC Lifting will lower each gantry to the floor via a specially designed lifting frame to allow the work to be completed safely and to reduce the impact of weather conditions.

Once on the floor, the two smaller cantilever maintenance gantries will be transported to RHC Lifting’s Bristol Headquarters to be stripped and a quotation will be raised to repair/replace any defective parts. The two larger main maintenance gantries will be inspected on-site. RHC Lifting will use their experience gained from inspecting and repairing maintenance gantries under the M5 Avonmouth Bridge.

The two main maintenance gantries were installed on Tamar Bridge in 1998 and the two cantilever maintenance gantries were installed in 2001 and are all due their statutory inspections in the next few months.

Once re-assembled a static load test of each gantry will be carried out prior to installation. Once re-installed a performance and dynamic load test of the gantries will be completed over the length of the bridge structure.
